Here you’ll find some useful information about making your
advert. Also refer to the forum – where you can request and share
advice, and perhaps find some collaborators!

Update: Script Editing
We're excited to announce a new partnership with leading copywriting company Divine Write. The Divine Write forum is an established watering hole for a great many of Australia's professional copywriters, with nearly 100 members; and they have kindly offered to critique and edit scripts for Oz in 30 Seconds entries. If you would like your script reviewed by professional copywriters, head to our collaborative forum at Divine Write

Update: Professional Help
Professional video editor 'Morktron' and musician/filmmaker 'Danimations' have both kindly offered their services on our discussion forum.

Equipment

The easiest way to film your short ad will probably be on a digi-cam. If
you don’t have one, try finding a collaborator on the forum who does;
otherwise check out the following places for rental:

An appropriate camera can cost anything from about $200/day up – so
obviously it’s preferable to find a friend with a digicam! But if you
are hiring, make sure you look for a camera with progressive-scan (a
good one is the Panasonic AG-DVX100), and ask them to chuck in a tripod
and perhaps even a boom microphone.

You may want to try contacting the Media and Film Faculty at your local University,
or even a Performing Arts High School. The students there are always up
for a hands-on project, and often have free access to equipment, and
more importantly, they know how to use it!

Filming

If you don’t have a film student/professional handy, the following sites
can give you some help with filming your Ad.

Once you’ve filmed the footage for your ad, might need to do some editing.
At the very least you will need to save it on your computer to upload
to us. Please refer to the ‘Submit Entry’ section for details.

Editing and Post Production

There are a variety of programs available for editing your video. IMovie and
Windows Movie Maker come with most new Macs and PCs respectively.

You can also use a shareware program such as Jahshaka, which is available
for free download at www.jahshaka.org and has a number of advanced editing and
post-production functions.

Copyright and Clearances

We'll only be able to use your Ad if it is ‘cleared’ that is, if you have written permission from all contributors. Contributors include actors, locations, samples and music. When you submit your film to GetUp, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have obtained all the necessary clearances. But don’t worry – we’re here to help!

Please check that the clearances you have obtained include internet use (‘All media’ covers internet as well). Clearances should ideally be for use in territories throughout the world, and in perpetuity (indefinitely).

Music and Samples

As it’s often hard to get big-shot artists and their record labels to sign
your clearances, it’s best to stay away from using popular music or
samples in your ad. The good news is, there’s a whole heap of open
license music and samples out there for you to use.
