I guess our challenge was to express a range of values in a simple way, and our hop-hip guy is a kind of shorthand for many US influences on our culture (and politics). There are lots of other, more full-on things we have in common with the USA (like the fact that we're still in Iraq too), but our idea was to present images that everyone can relate to (since we cover a number of issues in a short time). Also, it's kind of funny (we think).

I agree hip-hop is an international phenomenon (in fact my last music video was for an Aussie hip-hop artist!). It's great that as Australians we have our own voice (actually many diverse voices) within that broad category... (and that musicians don't always have to dress up like their American counterparts!).

And notice what's behind the hip-hop guy: a Hummer - an American vehicle with 'consumerism' written all over it..! Not the healthiest influence...

Our point is that we're empowered to create the Australia we imagine. The agenda needn't be defined by other nations, no matter how powerful they might be.
